Volcano Wilderness Runs
This year is the 25th Annual Kilauea Volcano Wilderness Run, 28 July 2007.
Sean Stueber will be the chairman this year.
This Marathon is considered one of the most difficult in the world as it not only goes through the desert but down into the
calderas etc. There are aid stations approximately every 3 miles along the marathon course and on the 10 mile course at
mile 2 and 7. The radio club has volunteers at all the stations on the marathon route, calling in the numbers of the runners to
the net control area in the chapel. who relays it to the race officials, who mark the progress of the runners along the route.
If one of the runners does not go through an aid station they know where to start looking for him/her. Sometimes the
volunteer who works the Kau desert station goes out the night before and camps there, as it is one of the first stations that
the runners go through in the morning. The marathon starts at 6AM so our radio people have to be there and set up at
5:30AM.
The marathon consists of four different activities. The Wilderness marathon itself is 26.2 miles. There is also a 10 mile Rim
Run starting at 7AM, A 5 mile Kilauea Caldera Run starting at 7:15 AM and the 5 mile Kilauea Caldera Walk at 7:15 (This
walk is the same route as the 5 mile run) Hope this gives you an idea of what a strenuous day it is for the runners and
walkers.
Check back after the events for some pictures of Hams (and runners) in action.
