Joseph Rosenbaum's service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, 2/14/25.
Location: Top of Mauna Loa Road. (Off of Saddle Road, as far up the road as the previous lava flow and road conditions allow.)
Note: The Mauna Loa observatory access road was partially closed due to the 2022 lava flow at the 8900’ level. The service will be as far up towards the Mauna Loa observatory as we can reasonably get.
Directions From Hilo:
Go up Saddle Road (Hwy 200) to just before the Maunakea Kea access road. Turn left onto Mauna Loa Road. If you reach the Maunakea Access Road, you have gone too far.
This road begins at the 27.7 mile point of Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Hwy 200), just Hilo side of Pu?u Huluhulu Native Tree Sanctuary.
If you are not familiar with the area, Mauna Loa Road is a single-lane paved road that winds up the mountain. We suggest that you time your drive to arrive at the intersection of Saddle and Mauna Loa Road by 1:30 PM.
Details:
Richard Turner, WH6FLH, is coordinating the service and will be heading up early. Once in the vicinity, you can use the National Calling Frequency at 146.520 MHz simplex to reach others in the group.
Jim Tatar, Tony Kitchen, and others expect to arrive at the intersection of Saddle Road and Mauna Loa Road by 1:30 PM. We expect to get a report on road conditions from Richard and will provide updates.
The road is slow going due to all of the curves. We believe the lava has not been cleared.
**Please stay off the 2022 lava flow to protect yourself from hazardous conditions. These include, but are not limited to, hot spots with high temperatures, unstable footing, and sharp lava rocks.**
