Would you like to be a volunteer affiliated with the Hawai'i Island Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster and Community Organizations Active in Disaster?

(Amateur Radio Operations)

The mission of the Hawai'i Island VOAD/COAD is to facilitate the provision of comprehensive services to the people of Hawai'i Island in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, by fostering cooperation, communication, coordination, and collaboration. In the event of a disaster on Hawai'i Island, we will activate and work closely with our partner, Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency. Please also see the Hawaii VOAD fact sheet and visit the Hawaii VOAD website for more information on Hawaii State VOAD.

The following is a summary of how an FCC-licensed amateur radio operator willing to volunteer may assist the Hawai'i Island VOAD/Community Organizations Active in Disaster.

  • Continue to participate in the monthly test of the Maunakea Hawaii VOAD repeater, on the first Saturday of each month starting at noon. (See the nets page for details.)

  • Contact Tony Kitchen, WH6DVI at tonykitchen808@gmail.com or David Miller, KH6CZ at davroymill@gmail.com. BIARC and the Hawaii'i Island VOAD Communications Committee are working together to coordinate and develop communication plans, and to help you meet volunteers affiliated with member organizations in your area. Please provide the name of the community you live and/or work in. During a disaster, you could be a vital lifeline.

  • Let us know if you are willing to "Elmer" another licensed operator. Some existing FCC licensed volunteers have little or no experience with amateur radio.

  • Look at the list of Hawaii VOAD/COAD organizations.

    • Find one that you would like to work with.

    • Reach out and get to know them.

    • Volunteer to be their representative on a Hawaii VOAD/COAD Committee.

    • The Hawai'i Island VOAD communications committee needs additional volunteers.

  • Any organization that qualifies and wishes to provide assistance related to disaster response and recovery operations may join with a $25 annual membership. (per county.)

  • Governmental partners are already part of the group. They do not need to pay dues and their participation, as permitted by agency leadership, is always welcome.

BIARC is a 501(c)(7) tax-exempt entity, supported by our members and volunteers. Please consider making a donation.
